4 Steps to Building a Strong Social Media Strategy

A social media strategy is crucial in helping you stand out from the competition. You can use this strategy for direction and consistency, as well as reaching your goals. Creating a social media strategy of your own can be challenging, but it’s worth the extra work. Once you have an established strategy in place, you can capitalize on what’s working and fix what’s not.

Below are four steps to creating a solid social media strategy that will benefit your brand.

Step 1: Define your goal.

It’s important to define your goals because this gives you something to work towards, as well as results to measure. Here are some common goals that you might have for social media:

  • Drive traffic to your website
  • Strengthen your relationships with customers
  • Reach a wider audience
  • Sell your products and services

Step 2: Understand your target audience.

You should always be learning about your audience. The better you understand them, the easier it is to create messages that relate to them. Start with your audience’s demographics. Where do they live? How old are they? Are they male or female?

Next, consider your audience’s interests and values. What types of things are they interested in? What activities and hobbies do they enjoy? Now think about their pain points. When people look for a product or service, it’s usually to solve a problem of some sort. By recognizing your customers’ frustrations, you can better position your product or service as a solution.

Finally, determine what types of content your audience likes to consume and the channels where they hang out on. Some audiences enjoy memes, images and videos on social media, while others prefer long-form content sent through email. It’s in your best interests to learn this information so that you can create content that your audience actually wants to read.

Step 3: Select the best social networks.

Going off our last point, identify the social networks where your audience is most active. Narrow them down to one or two networks so that you can focus your attention on the right areas. The top social networks are Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn. Each network has its own benefits, so consider your industry, where your competitors are and where your customers spend their time.

Step 4: Measure your results.

Lastly, check up on your performance to see what’s working and what’s not. What type of content sees the most engagement? What days and times do you see the most activity? How does your activity compare to your competitors? While this might seem like a lot of work, it tells you how well your efforts are working and how you compare to your competitors.

By following these four steps, you can create a strong social media strategy that helps you reach your goals. If you need help getting your social media efforts up to speed, contact WSI Internet Partners for affordable, effective solutions.
